Hi,

It’s Time for an Honest Debate About the Provision of Healthcare

By MARCUS STEAD

We need to face up to reality about the National Health Service. For too long, it has been politically taboo to question whether the current model is either the best way of providing healthcare, or its sustainability in the long term.

William Beveridge
William Beveridge, the true founder of the NHS.

The Labour Party likes to portray Aneurin Bevan as the founder of the NHS. This is not the case. In fact, it was a key recommendation of the Beveridge Report of 1942, in which William Beveridge, a Liberal economist, outlined social reforms that were to be brought in at the end of World War II.

Both the Conservative and Labour parties agreed in principle to implement the report’s recommendations, regardless of which party won the first general election after the war (it came in 1945, and was won by Labour).

Beveridge’s vision was of a National Health Service run through local health centres and regional hospital administrations. In other words, they were to be non-political and free from government interference. But in the years immediately after 1945, Labour’s Minister of Health, Aneurin Bevan, had other ideas.

Aneurin Bevan
Aneurin Bevan, whose role in the creation of the NHS continues to be absurdly overstated.

Bevan, a temperamental, undiplomatic, extreme left winger, loathed by many inside the Labour Party, fought hard in Cabinet to abandon Beveridge’s vision in favour of a centralised structure of 14 regional boards appointed by the Minister of Health and local management committees.

From that moment onwards, the NHS became a political football, and it has remained so ever since. Bevan, knowing full well the implications of the seed he was sowing, didn’t allow facts and evidence to get in the way of his ideological dogma. Sir Harold Webbe, the Conservative leader on London County Council, was unhappy about local government’s role in the NHS being removed, and said of Bevan, “He is so full of his own importance that he is prepared to pit his knowledge against the accumulated experience of this council, which is to be butchered to make a Welshman’s holiday.”

Yet even Beveridge’s vision for an NHS contained three major assumptions that sounded quite reasonable at the time, but subsequently turned out to be utterly incorrect:

  1. As people became healthier, demand on the NHS would decrease.
  2. The demographics of society would remain roughly the same.
  3. The NHS could be paid for from ‘the stamp’, now known as National Insurance.

The reality has been utterly different. Huge medical advances in the last 60 years have resulted in significantly increased life expectancy, albeit with the assistance of ongoing care and drugs, which come at a price.

With the exception of the Callaghan government of 1976-79, all administrations have overseen vast increases in real-terms spending on the NHS, as demographics shifted, demand increased, and medical advances continued. By the late 1980s, National Insurance could just about cover pensions and contributory benefits, with the occasional bit of help from general taxation, but it was certainly no longer in a position to fund the NHS.

There is some evidence that Margaret Thatcher understood the magnitude of the problem as long ago as the early 1980s, but she was advised not to handle the ‘hot potato’.

The time has come to end the mawkish obsession with the NHS model, which was epitomised at the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony by the sight of nurses jumping up and down on beds. Britain’s cancer and stroke survival rates are significantly down on where they should be for an apparently rich country, and there is a lack of choice on the part of the patient.

It is easy to see why the Labour Party is so ideologically attached to the NHS. It frequently misleads people into believing it is a Labour creation, and is one of very few things in this country that can in any way, shape or form be described as a Labour success story.

The quasi-religious reverence with which the Labour Party treats the NHS, and the way in which it tries to make bogeymen of anyone who questions it in any way, is holding back a full, honest and frank debate about how we provide sustainable healthcare for the next 50 years.

When they hear any form of criticism of the NHS, their default position is always to make crude comparisons with the system in the USA, one they rarely know very much about, and are quick to point to horror stories within, while conveniently ignoring the numerous deaths in the NHS due to poor hygiene, lengthy waiting times and medical negligence. Doctors and nurses themselves are treated as saints to be revered, rather than tax-funded employees who deserve praise and respect when they do well, but should not be above criticism when they fall short of certain standards.

It is as though no other countries or healthcare systems exist elsewhere in the world. Why can’t we try to learn lessons from Singapore, which from a very low starting point in the 1960s, has managed to create and sustain one of the very best health systems anywhere on earth? Or what about continental Europe, where many countries operate with a mix of public and private healthcare, with compulsory insurance schemes using various models?

This debate should have begun at least 20 years ago, but there are signs that we are approaching the point where the current NHS system is unsustainable. Sooner or later, we will have to face up to this impending reality. Is it not better to do so while the hospitals and GP surgeries are just about working?

The Labour party has never since the NHS’s inception missed an opportunity to lay claim to having founded the NHS and attributing it to Aneurin Bevan. As with so much else that seems to emmanate from socialists it is a misleading and dishonest claim.
Clearly William Beveridge drew up his report the background of which can be read CLICK HERE
Churchill’s wartime government endorsed the 300 page 1942 report and in 1943 Churchill gave an undertaking that whatever government was elected after the w ar they would impliment the report, having gained the undertaking of both Labour & The Liberals.
Unfortunately the task fell to Labour and the deeply unpopular Aneurin Bevan was tasked with the job of implementation – whther of his own volition or under the influence of his openly Communist wife, Jenny Lee, he immediately campaigned to change the structure of the NHS as clearly laid out by Beveridge – it was thus that Bevan converted the brave concept of the NHS placing it under direct control of the Government and the management of 14 separate Health Boards.
Thus began the unravelling of the economist Sir William Beveridge’s report and the conversion of the NHS to being a political football – the seeds of the NHS’s problems of today were sewn by this meddling and ineptitude of Aneurin Bevan and although evelcted from a humble background in a Welsh Valleys Constituency he rarely returned and eventually died of stomach cancer on his farm in the home counties!
More of this background can be found if you CLICK HERE
Unpalatable as Socialists may find the truth it is worthy of note that the implementation of the Beveridge Report was a cross party decision and the ineptitude of that implementation and the problems of today were as a result of the ineptitude of Aneurin Bevan his personal ambitions endorsed by his socialist colleagues!

Hi,

clearly yet unsurprisingly the EU concept of Regional assemblies, which downgraded wales from being a proud Principality with meaningfull input to National politics at Westminster has left them struggling with largely incompetent, unskilled, ill prepared and utterly incompetent super annuated County Councillors managing multi Million £ budgets way beyond their levels of competence.

Here is yet another example:

The £12m cash injection by the Welsh government to three of Wales’s struggling NHS boards is not a bailout, according to the health minister on 2 May 2012.
Lesley Griffiths AM came under attack during an urgent question tabled by the Conservatives.
A question was asked on NHS finances following the health minister’s claim that all health boards have ‘met financial targets’.
While all have been congratulated in a ministerial statement for a ‘remarkable achievement’, three have received money totalling over £12 million from 2012-13 budgets.
Leader of the Conservatives Andrew RT Davies argued that “this is effectively a loan, it is definitely a bailout, this kind of ‘Enron economics’ is absolutely unforgiveable”.

Plaid Cymru’s Finance Spokesperson Ieuan Wyn Jones described it as “an astounding attempt by the Labour Welsh government to mislead us into thinking that our LHBs have stayed within budget”.
According to Kirsty Williams, Leader of the Liberal Democrats “the health minister should be embarrassed and ashamed for issuing a statement like this”.

The level of utter incompetence and Government hubris that consigns the health of 13 Counties to such low grade and self interested muppets beggars belief – all be it nothing more than yet another EU scam to sabotage our democracy.

£Billions are squandered of OUR money at the cost of OUR health and let us not forget the catastrophic influence of the economically illiterate 13 years of misrule by Labour on a National basis also, which led to the sell off of so very many NHS assetts to fund their incompetence!

Hi,
A Complete pratt of a Doctor makes a fool of himself and his hospital – undermining his staff and making himself look an idiot showing off – Sad really when The Tories are already suffering from OUR-ENEMY-WITHIN who are trying to waterdown NHS Modernisation!

Anyone so insecure they need to hold their head on with a wing nut has got to have a problem!

Doc tells PM’s group: Off my ward!

Bemused ... David Cameron looks stunned at consultant's intervention as he visit patient accompanied by Nick Clegg

Stunned … David Cameron and deputy Nick Clegg look shocked at consultant’s tirade during hospital visit

DAVID Cameron was left stunned when a furious doctor burst in on the unveiling of his revised NHS reforms at a patient’s bedside today, screaming: “Get out!”

The irate senior orthopaedic surgeon stormed into the ward and ordered out TV crews filming the Prime Minister and deputy Nick Clegg, for ignoring hygiene rules aimed at preventing the spread of disease.
The consultant, seen wearing a bow tie, complained that several people in the room at Guy’s Hospital, London did not have their sleeves rolled up.
He was heard on TV footage shouting: “Why is that we are all told to walk around like this and these people…?”
Both Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg looked stunned by the sudden verbal blast, which came as they were due to announce findings from the NHS Future Forum.

SURGEON gets angry at group with PM and Clegg over ward dress code

Baffled Mr Cameron — who apologetically put his hands up and gestured at the TV crew to leave the ward — then said: “Why don’t we erm, why don’t we, why don’t you disappear… I agree.. out… because we’ve all taken our ties off.”
A member of hospital staff then ushers the consultant out of the ward but as the camera crew leaves, the doctor bellows: “I’m not having it, now OUT.”
It is understood that journalists in the PM’s party had checked with the ward sister whether they needed to wash their hands and roll up their sleeves. They were told it was not necessary because they were not coming into close contact with patients.
Mr Cameron and Mr Clegg had observed the drill because they were going to be close to the man.
A hospital spokeswoman said: “Arrangements for today’s visit were entirely consistent with infection control policy. One individual member of staff expressed concern with one element of the infection control measures employed, but this was not a view shared by the wider team.”

09-May-2011 – NHS REFORMS From An Informed Opinion

Hi,

challenged by this comment in red below a friend of mine married to an NHS Doctor checked and ammended his opinions in the light of both his and her opinion and experience.

The NHS needs a good shake up. Problem is, I suspect its as much about money and targets as it is about ‘don’t care

If the public knew how true that is, politicians would ALL be swinging from lamp posts.

I know one GP extremely well (have done for nigh on 31 years). Her practice is inner-city, predominantly immigrant, and very high on the deprivation index of same. Targets are the bane of her life, as is a meddlesome, politically-driven Primary Care Trust (PCT).

She has the ‘wrong’ sort of patients, so for three years prior to this one she’s had a pay freeze. This time it’s a pay cut (can’t do that to the staff, as they have NHS-determined rates). She’s also doing substantially more hours (nominally 3/4 time, actual hours about 40/week over 4 or 5 days depending on clinic patterns).

This is because they can’t afford another salaried GP, and, when one partner recently retired, they had no applications for the salaried (i.e. income-protected) job. Yup, that’s zero, zilch, nada, none at all. Nor can they recruit a Nurse Practitioner, and at least one other local health centre has had similar problems. Neither can recruit additional GPs, as apparently nobody wants to work there.

If you think that’s surprising, in view of the megabucks GPs are paid, read on…

Many simple things about the NHS are stupidly broken: discharge letters from hospitals, containing the details of treatment and instructions for follow-up care, arrive as physical paper letters: my daughter has a Saturday job scanning them into the practice system! The doctors still can’t get at all the test results from all the local hospitals on-line: most of them sometimes, some not at all. The systems linking the NHS together are terrible, and hospitals’ own records are inconsistent, and often chaotic (they don’t tell you that in the clinics or the X-ray departments!).

The ‘choose and book’ system for arranging appointments is a disaster. Hospitals block-out large amounts of clinic time, and the metrics are such that, once you’re on a waiting list, you are already counted as ‘dealt with’ (or something like that), and actually not on any waiting list for statistical not-meeting-our-targets measurement purposes. Bizzarre, dishonest, and wholly true.

I’m in IT (sort-of). All the GPs in this area have their IT provided under ‘contract’ from their PCT. The service standard is truly pitiful. In the past few years they have gone for days at a time without working computer systems in the practice. Given earlier NHS campaigns for ‘paperless’ surgeries, imagine the ‘fun’ that causes.

Patients could be forgiven for not understanding the reasons and being cross (hell, the doctors don’t understand the reasons!), but that does nothing to help GP’s stress levels, nor fix the problems. If my company served our commercial clients the same way, we wouldn’t be in business any more. The contract is effectively a monopoly – GPs pay, but have no real say in the service level provided. For those in the know, XML and PGP encryption (which would probably sort out the hospital connection in short order) might as well be the Enigma codes.

Whoever runs the NHS’ IT departments certainly doesn’t do so in the patients’ interest.

[Personal disclosure: we’d like to bid for local IT support contracts. We already have several in private healthcare and our customers are, generally speaking, delighted with us. We can’t get a foot in the general practice door though, as the PCT IT structure is incestuous, defensive, and behind the ‘firewall’ of public sector commissioning, meaning in practice small businesses can’t get anywhere near it.]

Regarding the PCT’s other management gaffes, there are endless anecdotes about their meddlesome ways. The most recent spectacular example of waste locally was replacing all the health centre carpets (the place is only about 5 years old!) with lino, as carpets are ‘unhygenic’ in consulting rooms. The facts that,

(a) it cost a fortune,
(b) the patients feel much less stressed in a room with carpets (wot, really?),
(c) the carpets didn’t need replacing, and
(d) the GPs protested (in writing) and were ignored, tells you everything you need to know about the PCT’s priorities.

Now the coalition, in essence, wants to add financial responsibility for hospitals (through ‘commissioning’) to GPs’ already overloaded job description. Why? Follow the money trail:

GPs have already been a convenient ‘aunt Sally’ for politicians. They got a half-decent income settlement from Blair’s last administration that went some way towards stopping the brain-drain. Ever since, successive governments have tried to claw it back, labelling GPs as ‘greedy’ and money-grabbing.

Chance would be a fine thing! There must be greedy, very wealthy GPs somewhere, but I’ve never met one. Her accountant takes home far more than she does, as do the lawyers they so often have to employ these days (employment tribunals, patient complaints and so on. They’ll need one on the staff eventually!). Don’t even ask about management in the local PCT (there’s a surprise!) — oddly, they don’t have any trouble recruiting.

If you don’t want clever, effective doctors, don’t pay ’em. The existing ones are obviously greedy and a bit thick, but don’t worry, they’re beginning to take the hint…

She already has to manage her imposed and artificial drug ‘budget’ (need an expensive drug? Fergeddit!), and will shortly also be funding some care delivery such as the treatment room staff. The budget transfer from the PCT for that function is estimated at 40% less than the PCT spends on it now. Go figure that one!

Nominally, the practice operates commercially as contractors to the NHS. In reality it’s a fantasy world of statistical targets (with financial penalties, etc.), ‘funny money’ (part-subsidised, no-choice services from the PCT, such as the dreadful IT), ordinary partnership accounts (for the Revenue), odd things like NHS pensions provision and staffing rules, pay grades, and so on.

It’s contract service provision, but not as we humans know it, Jim. The commercial world of TAC (total absorption costing), cost centres, budgeting and so on, doesn’t apply. It’s so muddled, I doubt anyone could measure efficiency in any meaningful way, nor say where money is being wasted (except perhaps the carpet suppliers!).

She’s already beginning to talk wistfully about early retirement, or a career change.

Given that reform of the NHS is obviously a priority. The question, for me, is this: Do you want your GP worrying about their nominal hospital budget when they should be finding your tumour, or would you rather the system was run properly in the first place?

Don’t blame the doctors for being human. They’re struggling to be professional in the face of a bl**dy huge, overbearing, expensive and self-serving bureaucracy, that sits like a fat leech on the back of the NHS where it can’t be touched. “No cuts to front-line services” is code for “We’ll dump the blame on the one group of professionals who can’t/won’t fight back”.

The person I know very well prides herself on spotting odd, life-threatening and difficult to diagnose things. She has twice had people drop dead in front of her whilst at work (and actually saved them through CPR – don’t think it’s like ‘Casualty’). She spends hours listening to people’s problems, and visits patients in her free time, presumably because she cares. But she shops at Asda and can’t afford to replace the 9-year-old car.

She tells me she didn’t qualify as a doctor to fight bureaucrats about the carpet in her room, nor to have to log onto the PCT system from home to stay on top of bureaucratic emails (no time in the surgery).

But she’s not superwoman either.

If you want it fixed, go deal with the politicians that caused the mess in the first place. Someone actually voted for Andrew Lansley, but I wonder how many of his constituents actually checked him out first, to find out what he was competent at, and how good he’d be in government.

The one thing about the present generation of politicians is that it’s their job. They do care if they lose it, because they’re otherwise largely unemployable. So we do have leverage, if we use it properly.

Other countries view MRI scans as cost-effective (i.e. cheap) diagnosis tools. Here, although we actually invented the things, we ration MRI time, and rely on charities to supply the machines. It’s beyond ridicule.

You can’t blame GPs for this, but you might, just, fix the people causing the problem in the first place, namely the incompetent and self-serving politicians.

Rant over. Sorry for taking up your time.

I am happy to publish my friend’s opinion as it is a considered view point that needs airing, that does not however mean I endorse his comments and some I profoundly disagree with.

07-May-2011 – 02:30hrs. MAU NEWPORT! Well I’ve Seen The Doctor!

07-May-2011 – 02:30hrs. MAU NEWPORT! Well I’ve Seen The Doctor!
Hi,
well having come in at about 20:00hrs. Finally all tests done cultures etc. and the results are back and FINALLY, although I knew I was doomed to stay, I have JUST seen the Doctor.

02:30hrs. and I have actually seen someone qualified in my field!

They have however finally cleared the waiting room:

A young lass who gave her name as Minna, probable Persian or Arab (actually Iraqi/Pakistanni parents), pleasant and as with all other treatment I have had she was thorough.
I gather my platelets are down to 34 – The Consultant Haematologist has been suitably woken/annoyed ;-).
The action plan is put me onto an anti biotics for the possible infection, seemingly from the mouth/teeth as clearly the imune system is somewhat stuffed and having trouble coping with the normal infections that flourish in the mouth!!!
As for transfusing, since the normal range of platlets is around 150,000 to 300,000 expressed as 150 to 300 and mine are now down to 34 the plan is to leave well alone for the rest of the night (what little exists) keeping a watching brief and then do a full set of bloods in the morning.
Once the new bloods are through then the decisions will be made!!!
Meanwhile back at the ranch and they are trying to find me a bed – that will no doubt keep half a dozen managers occupied! I gather I MAY get a bed but failing that they will put me on a trolley.
This is in the NHS where in Wales the blithering idiots in the so aptly named National ass for Wales have squandered £1Billion of health service money.

I note even the discredited half wits in the Welsh Lib. Dims. stated in their election leaflet:

Labour and Plaid are wasting a staggering £1Billion in our NHS.
They’ve wasted money shuffling bureaucrats around instead of focusing on the real problems.
This money should have been spent on healthcare – wasting it is a disgrace.

Not least of the stupidities has been rebadging The Gwent area NHS from the meaningless Glan Hafran Trust to the even more foolish Aneurin Bevan Trust – rebadging EVERYTHING – so just imagine the cost of that.

They have even produced an entirely new uniform for all the nurses right across Wales – they are ugly beyond belief!

Imagine a nurses uniform top that is firstly too short for the width of all too many of the nurses!
Secondly what idiot would design a nurses uniform that could ONLY be removed over the head!

This of course is prone to destroying any effort they may make to have a hair style, but far more concerning, do the idiots who designed them expect nursing staff to cut their way out and throw them away if they become contaminated with let us say blood, faeces or vomit!

Did anyone do any joined up thinking?
I am also aware that many of the nurses have found the new fabric used causes rashes.
The NHS quite clearly, like so much else in the over blown and over pasi public sector Kleptocracy of QUANGOs needs root and branch pruning reducing the useless levels of management and political nere do wells and apparatchicks by at least 50% to start with.
How can we expect a decent health service when it is dragged to its knees, not by medical requirements but management incompetence and political interferrence.
Oh well I gather I am considered quite unwell – it is astonishing that after 4 hours sleep last night I was awake at about 09:30hrs. And it is 03:00hrs. And still no bed.
The medical side jumps through all the hoops and delivers to the best of the equipment and manpower available.
Yes there ARE more managers feeding off of The NHS than there are beds – it is those excessive managers who believe that the best way to improve the service is to pay ever higher salaries, perks and pensions to managers and fund it by out sourcing basic secretarial services to Indian companies via Irish sub contractors – you couldn’t make it up could you!
OK no bed is likely to be available but they can give me a trolley in the open trolley bay!
I wonder how many wards the managers have closed this weekend to fund their salaries and pension contributions.
We have decided that since bloods will probably be somewhere around 05:00hrs. to 06:00hrs. I’ll stay in this consulting room and if very tired I can doze!
I just want to say sorry for copping out at times and leaving Lee and friends to cope!
Any help and support YOU can give her will be hugely welcome.
I do make a lousy patient!

20-Apr-2011 – THE DAY HAS COME – CHEMO. DAY ONE!!!

20-Apr-2011 – THE DAY HAS COME – CHEMO. DAY ONE!!!

Hi,

well the day has come!

I can’t say I am not concerned but it would be a huge exageration to claim I’m scared of it – I am anything but as chemo may prove to be my very best friend and save my life – despite all the grave warnings of sickness, hair loss, being ill, feeling terrible and the like – all give you a temperature be it a bit high or a bit low failure leaves you COLD!

So this is the first step to recovery, even if due to the sheer incompetence of the National Ass for Wales management of what was once a National Health Service – and was meant to be just that under the Beverrage Plan until the idiot Aneurin Bevan was given the job of implementing the policy which having failed to understand it – in part from inate stupidity but much as a result of his Champagne Socialist prefferences and idiology not to mention the input of his Marxist wife Jenny Lee.

The result has been that The NHS has become an over managed, mismanaged political football surrounded by Political idiologies and acting through its multi layered Kleptocrtatic QUANGOcracy as little more than a sponge to mop up unemployable quasi socialist middle class management of clearly low grade.

How come I find 3 stories of A&E in a pile of cardboard boxes as a permanent potacabin encampment at The Royal Gwent if it were not for missmanagement?

The huddle of cardboard boxes bolted onto the Velindre Hospital as a CDU (where I have my chemo.) with ramped bits of board to join up the levels on uneven ground. I gather this cardboard city was a temporary measure whilst further facilities were built but 3.1/2 years on there is no sign of the building and the ceilings in the cardboard boxes is buckling and breaking up.

One only ever notices ceilings in Hospital Beds and Honey Moon Suites!

This is a product of The Devolved Irresponsibility of The risibly over styled dump for useless space wasting of The Welsh Assembly Government.

A useless QUANGO in itself – merely a means of rubber stamping EU Directives and bribing yet another army of unemployable lick spittles who have, so I am reliably informed in print by The equally idiotic Lib.Dims. have wasted £1Billion of health SERVICE money in the last 12 months!

Sadly I am not surprised – When you note the huge amount of time, effort and investment that has been put into re-badging The Gwent Hospital Trust as ‘The Aneurin Bevan Hospital Trust’ and kitting out all the nurses in new uniforms and re-liverying all the Hospital and Trust vehicles – Did this help a single patient? Did it clean a single filthy ward? Did it save a single life?

I believe you will find that every question gets an emphatic NO.

However for lack of competent management and utter dishonesty and failure to supply the hospital with the requisite CT Scanner or for that matter manage additional shifts to ensure clinical needs were met – I for one may prove in the long run to have been killed by the self serving utter incompetence of Health Care Wales which sees itself as a job creation and marketing organisation designed to display the incompetence and irrelevance of most forms of Consultancy and Administarion, when particularly exempt from accountability as is too often the case in the feather bedded world of The Snivel Cervants.

Well off to Velindre we left with time to spare expecting to arrive at 12:45hrs. for 13:00hrs. – NO SUCH LUCK!

Just before the Coldra Roundabout the traffic ground to a halt – so we phoned to say we would be late but no idea when the CDU was great and just reassured us it would be OK they would fit us in. As a result of some rather ‘rapid’ driving after we passed the single lorry sitting undamaged in the center lane about 5 miles on, we were a mere 20 minutes late!

No problem we gather as Pharmacy is running 1.1/2 hours behind (A Management problem due to lack of allocation of resources in staff numbers to maintain the right output for clinical need) – IS THERE ANY PART OF THE NHS NOT BEING DESTROYED BY ITS OWN USELESS MANAGEMENT?

Well after much time wasting eventually we set off on the treadmill, so to speak.

Bed allocated and then the tedium of signing my life away admitting I knew the risks and knew this was not a cure and knew etc. etc. etc. and now sign this form.

I kept thinking if they can’t manage to keep the ceiling boards up and house the unit in something more solubrious than a glorified packing case wjhat chance they had a clue what they were doing with the medical treatment!!

Anyway medical steps:

01: Place fist and forarm in a bucket of hot/warm water for 5 minutes to relax and open all the veins (that’ll fool them!)

02: Find a suitable vein on the back of the hand and see if you can make it hurt as you insert a cannula needle:

03: Flush the vein for a few minutes with saline.

04: Switch to a bag of chemo that goes in at 999mg an hour so about 40 minutes!
The first bag was the Gemcitabine which is using a saline carrier – no effects discomfort or pain

05: Flush the vein for a few minutes with saline.

06: Switch to a second bag of chemo that goes in at 999mg an hour so about 40 minutes!
The second bag was the Carboplatin which uses a glucose carrier base and is in a black bag cover as it is light sensative (I hope I have these two the right way around! More to the point I hope they did!!!!) – no effects discomfort or pain.

07: Flush the vein for a few minutes with saline.

08: remove needles/cannula & tapes and away to go 😉

09: WELL NOT QUITE!
More ‘debriefing’ this time with a care packet and warnings that I may have all sorts of dire consequences like sickness & heavy periods!! well that’s what the leaflet says! diarrhoea, flue like symptoms, temperature and durance vile!!
So here is a big bag of specialist anti sickness pills and our phone number 24/7 if you have ANY queries.

Well let the lions into the arena and as a gladiator about to do battle salute the Emperor:
‘Those about to die Salute you Caesar’

It was more convincing in The Colosseum than in a cardboard box set up as a Welsh NHS chemo clinic I’m sure!

Well off home expecting to be ill at any moment and shiver and ache with the ague!

Eventually I went to bed at about 04:00hrs. having waited until I was feeling ill so that I could THEN try to sleep on and sleep through it – but no sign of the ill bit, so I gave up and went to bed!

I do feel sorry for Lee – I have no option but enjoin the battle but she has the onerous task of watching and hoping that all will be well, it must be very scarey for her after more than half of her life with me!

I just want to say sorry for copping out at times and leaving Lee and friends to cope!
Any help and support YOU can give her will be hugely welcome.
I do make a lousy patient!

BEWARE – DANGER- CAVEAT

 Hi,

PLEASE READ The Times article on co payment in the NHS whichcan be found at:

There is a huge danger here – Yes it may be great news that YOU can fund your own drugs if the NHS abrogates onm its duty and selects YOU for EUthenasia but in the hands of a Government which since Gordon Brown took over responsibility for Britain’s finances has incurred debt at the rate of £9,111 per second 24 hours a day and is personally directly responsible for Britain’s exposure to the so called credit crunch as a result of permitting Banks to buy junk paper from America as sordid self seeking gamblers.
Do remember this is the man who incurred £2TRILLION of debt which counted at £1 a second will take 63,000 years to count.

Perhaps I am a tad sceptical when the BBC under his control pays imbecillic and irresponsible foul mouthed children £16,000 a day on £18Million contracts – no wonder it is convenient to kill people as his Government’s policy rather than pay for the drugs.

I believe, based on the duplicity and corruption of our politicians and the FACT that they are paying huge amounts to N.I.C.E. & P.C.Ts. etc. to hide the Governments corruption rather than fund treatment & drugs, there is every reason to believe that They will shortly open Harold Shipman Wards in NHS Hospitals for those they intend to kill UNLESS you pay for your own drugs!

This is the thin end of a very evil wedge – don’t hold out ANY hope the opposition will speak out – Theresa May last week when picking the opposition choice for a HoC debate whilst credit collapses, unemployment spirals out of control, bankruptcys burgeon, and a currency crash tsunami is imminent chose THE most important subject the Tories could think of: ‘Did the BBC handle the Jonathan Ross affair competently’ Frankly Theresa that may be the most important event the Tories are capable of handling but frankly who gives a ****!

I support EUthenasia by choice I Totally Repudiate State Murder!

Regards,
Greg L-W.
