More than 60 hospitals cannot afford the rising cost of private finance initiative schemes and are being left “on the brink of financial collapse”, says Health Secretary Andrew Lansley – in a convenient bit of grandstanding just prior to the Tory party conference.

He is telling is that trusts are now unable to pay for their schemes – believed to be worth more than £5.4 billion in total – because the payments of their “NHS mortgages” have inflated during the recession.

But at least there the trusts get something of value from PFI – albeit at greater cost than necessary – not so the £6.4 billion (some say more than £12 billion) that has been spent on the NHS National Programme for IT. Like the regional fire centres – only at far greater cost – it too has been abandoned. Local health trusts may now choose their own IT systems. It is being left to them to ensure that their systems are linked nationally.

And so another grandiose government scheme hits the dust. But there will be no resignations. No one will be fired – not one of the many people still in office, responsible for the failed system, will be tarnished. Many have been promoted and will continue with their glittering careers, then to retire in comfort on their inflated pensions.

And we are expected to pay. Not only that, if we so much as hesitate in giving them what they demand, draconian fines are levied at a national level while local tax defaulters face prison.

This is the politics of madness. The continued profligate wastage, and the contemptuous attitude of public officials in their duty of care for public money, almost beggars belief. Their attitude and their staggering incompetence makes rebellion not only necessary, but a duty. A parallel might be the duty to withhold drink from an alcoholic. In terms of public finance, the system has overdosed on our money and, as long as it is given more, it will continue its binge spending.

Nevertheless, we cannot take on the state full frontal. We must fight clever, effectively resorting to guerrilla tactics. And with the state consuming ever greater amounts of the national wealth, with no end to the waste, this is not an optional extra, but a matter of survival.

The more we give the machinery of state, the more it will want – its appetite is insatiable. We have to find ways of saying “no”.

Hi,

I guess not many people’s blogs have a full frontal (Anterior) and rear (Posterior) picture of the blogger without clothes.

What a relief it is a skeletal scan rather than a normal photograph!

I gather this shows no signs of cancer in the bones nor signs of gross tumours elsewhere. It was a huge relief when I was declared ‘bone sound’! It is not a deffinite repriev but it is not the death sentence it might have been.

NEDM – No Evidence of Distant Metastases.

For the fuller write up of when the scan was done CLICK HERE

04-Apr-2011 – 10:10hrs? – Royal Gwent – Full Body Bone Scan
Be in for 09:30hrs. pick up bloods sheet from urology & see phlebotomy FIRST – the Radiography for the full skeletal scan on a machine quite like this:

.

NOTE:
The shadow of the remaining kidney on the Right side.
The massive hernia to Left abdomen
The skeletal distortion due to hernia.
.

NOTE:
This is the same Anterior image but on a ‘Pulse’ setting! Yeah, I’m not sure what the settings are/mean but when I find out I’ll add it in!
.

NOTE:
The remaining Right Kidney shows up much better on this scan where it is closer to the back than front.
You can also see the spinal deformity due to the very visible Left side hernia.
.

NOTE:
This is the same Posterior image but on a ‘Pulse’ setting! Yeah, I’m not sure what the settings are/mean but when I find out I’ll add it in!

On this setting various new things become visible – I’m not sure I will guess them right but I’ll have a go and obviously my hard core medical info. is subject to correction by someone who knows what they are talking about – rather than my semie informed guesses in this instance!
Mid thorax there is a puzzling anomaly which had everyone guessing for a while but after further XRays on another machine it was decided the strangely vacant area was probably some long past injury but was NOT thought to be cancerous, malignant or threatening (I got the impression no one quite knows what has caused it!
Moving down I believe that the ‘flares’ just above the bladder may well be Lymph Nodes that are enlarged, cancerous and necrotic (But I’m not sure!). I may be entirely wrong as on the previous pic. the two flares seem to be aligned with a part of the pelvis!
Then there is a ‘flare on the outer left of the bladder upper which would seem to be the uretal stump which has become cancerous and is the current primary that must be ‘zapped’ (Medical term for can we kill it before we kill the patient!!

CAVEAT & REQUEST!
Anyone who can throw further light on these scans on a professional basis in lay/patient language would be much appreciated.

Do please send me an ‘e’mail and I will OBVIOUSLY protect your professional identity if you so wish.

Thank you and I’m sure those reading this blog will appreciate any help you can give, particularly corrections and developement of my comments!

03-Apr-2011 – Tomorrow Is just daunting!

03-Apr-2011 – Tomorrow Is just daunting!

Hi,

I have to be at The Royal Gwent Hospital at 09:00hrs. in the morning – for me that time of day is quite daunting enough!

That means leaving the house for a 1/4mile walk to where my car has to be parked, due to idiotic planning by MBC. So to be sure to be on time I need to leave at about 08:00hrs. so up at about 07:15hrs.

I guess as the treatment ‘beats me about’ I’d better get one of those Blue Badges just in case I plain can’t cope with a walk that far!

Yeah I know that is making a fuss about something all sorts of people do as a natural every day but may I remind them they haven’t had this bastard disease for 13 years! My sleep patterns are crazy!

So find somewhere to park at The Royal Gwent and pick up a form from whoever is on duty on The Urology Unit and set out on the trek to Phlebotomy for them to take at least half an arm full of bloods – before we go any further My Consultant wants to know every detail he can, which is reassuring.

Then for the trek to Nuclear Medicine where I am due at 10:00hrs. to WILLINGLY!!!! be injected with a Radioactive Isatope (as if the Japanese folly isn’t delivering enough already! – Well the probably will soon!).

I then have to find something to do for about 4 hours until I glow from every bone!

Then back to be scanned for a full skeletal scan – I’m told there are no side effects from the drug/injection but I must say if I am to keep away from Pregnant Women and small children (easy as it tends to be a habit on my part!!) I just have this feeling that if it MIGHT harm third parties then it can’t be doing me much good!

Interestingly, as Lee will confirm, I am finding it increasingly difficult to actually DO anything or make decisions – which at a time like this is so very selfish of me but I am increasingly focusing on beating this vile disease. Perhaps it will be a bit more rational after Wednesday when I get the results and we ‘Make a Plan’ for treatments and what that might entail.
