Hi,

Jess Commons
Doctor or psychiatrist consulting and diagnostic examining stressful woman patient on obstetric - gynecological female illness, or mental health in medical clinic or hospital healthcare service center © Getty Doctor or psychiatrist consulting and diagnostic examining stressful woman patient on obstetric – gynecological female illness, or mental health in medical clinic or hospital healthcare service center For many young women (myself included), female-specific cancers seem like an older person’s game – something we’ll worry about when the menopause comes, or even later, when we’re sitting in an old people’s home. Actually, though, when it comes to ovarian cancer, nearly half of cases are found in women under 65. And almost two thirds of us (again, myself included) are not confident in recognising the telltale symptoms of ovarian cancer, according to a study from BMI Healthcare.

According to new research from the charity Ovarian Cancer Action, 82% of women are unable to name the four main symptoms, while 70% could be ignoring the telltale signs of the deadly disease. Ovarian cancer is the sixth most common cancer in women in the UK. It affects more than 7,000 women each year with incidence “rising sharply from around age 30-34”. Half of cases appear in women under 65.

According to Professor Gordon Rustin, Consultant Medical Oncologist at BMI Bishops Wood Hospital, the symptoms of ovarian cancer tend to be not all that different from those reported in relation to other, more common problems, which probably goes some way to explain why 70% of the women from the survey who had experienced symptoms of ovarian cancer, had not sought medical help. “They are similar to the symptoms from many common non-cancerous conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion or menstrual problems,” he says.

Shot of a young woman experiencing stomach pain on the sofa at home © Getty Shot of a young woman experiencing stomach pain on the sofa at home As with all cancers, early diagnosis is always best, but this is especially the case with ovarian cancer, where the majority of stage 1 cases can actually be successfully treated. “Once it has spread, though,” warns Professor Rustin, “the majority cannot unfortunately be cured. I see some women who had symptoms for a year or more and one wonders whether if they had had an ultrasound scan or CA125 blood test earlier they might have been diagnosed when still stage 1.”

So what are the symptoms? Well, as Professor Rustin says, they could be mistaken for less-serious things like IBS, or even period pain, and include pain in the lower abdomen or side, irregular periods, being sick and going to the loo often.

Those affected could also feel bloated and swollen. “Feeling bloated is one of the most common symptoms related to ovarian cancer and is usually worse after eating,” says Professor Rustin, adding that sufferers may end up cutting back on food to prevent this.

Woman suffering from stomach ache © Getty Woman suffering from stomach ache However, bloating and swelling of the abdomen is something that most women experience around once a month anyway, during their period. So how are you supposed to know when it’s something more sinister? “The big difference between bloating or swollen abdomen associated with menstruation is that with menstruation it is related to the menstrual cycle and rarely lasts for more than a few days, while with cancer it gets progressively worse and requires investigation if it lasts for more than than one to two weeks.”

Professor Rustin also says that pain during sex could be a sign. This could manifest itself as a “deep tenderness or sometimes more severe and sharp”. Constipation may be a symptom, too, if the patient hasn’t been troubled by it before and it “cannot be explained by a change in diet.”

Hi,

Alex Trebek is one of the USA’s best-known TV personalities.

For more than 30 years, he’s hosted the iconic game show ‘Jeopardy!’ – versions have been tried on UK TV in the 1990s, hosted by Steve Jones for ITV, followed by a version for Sky One, hosted by Paul Ross. In the UK, it came and went.

In the USA, it has been consistently popular for decades. Jeopardy is currently going through a very interesting period as contestant James Holzhauer breaks all sorts of records – it is quite extraordinary to watch him answer questions on such a wide range of subjects. He has currently made $1.6 million, and it’s increasing with each episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xs7pRcpkeE

In March, Trebek, 78, announced he had stage IV pancreatic cancer in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cInGyxCY9k

Earlier this week, he appeared on Good Morning America where he spoke candidly about his diagnosis, the effects of chemotherapy etc:

and there is more information on his illness here:

Hi,

MRSA – Article 1 – Introduction.

MRSA Infections – MRSA Symptoms – MRSA Prevention  Treatment Information for MRSA or Staph Infection.

CA-MRSA – Community Acquired MRSA is now on the increase.

Prevention, however, is better than cure.

Symptoms, Treatment and Prevention Information for MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) infection and Staph Infection is now available through this Section of the Illuminati Silver Website, which has been written by someone who has, over the past 10 years, had success in the treatment of over 2,200 cases.

On this site, we shall give you the medical information required to understand the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacterium. Our information on MRSA and associated pathogens, along with suggested treatment information provided should enable you to defeat this bacterium, where antibiotics sometimes fail.

This site provides guidance and information protocols for light to severe and life-threatening infections. The author has an unblemished MRSA – VRSA – LRSA – MRSE and Osteomyelitis eradication record that spans several years. Has your doctor told you that your MRSA condition is incurable? He/she may be wrong. Do not suffer because antibiotics are failing – there are non-toxic eradication courses available with no or few side-effects available.

MRSA – Understand the enemy and you can win the war…

What is MRSA?

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a common type of staph bacterium which lives on the skin and in the nasal passages of around 30% of the population. Mostly, this staph aureus bacterium does no harm and does not pose a problem with infection or require a cure. But, like many bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus has the ability to pose a serious infection problem, if you are feeling run down, ill, injured or if you have undergone any form of surgery. It can cause a very serious staph infection, if it enters the body, such as through open wounds, or instruments placed in the body, or by cross-contamination from another patient, nursing staff or specialist. Without the proper medical treatment and medical information, this can lead to death or be difficult to cure.

MRSA and Staph.aureus infections are most commonly transmitted from person to person by touch. It is also possible to acquire MRSA infection from dust containing contaminated skin particles or from objects in the environment, or from surfaces that may be contaminated with the MRSA bacterium.

An antibiotic called Methicillin was used for the treatment and cure of infections caused by staph bacterium. The term ‘Methicillin resistant’ means that this type of antibiotic can no longer kill 100% of the staph bacterium and another antibiotic needs to be used, if available. If Methicillin can no longer be used for the treatment and cure ofStaphylococcus aureus infection, it is medically referred to as MRSA.

The Causation of MRSA

Antibiotics have been in use for many years as a successful treatment and cure for staph infections. However, these antibiotics have been overused, misused and over prescribed as a cure for staph aureus infection for many years. It is fairly common for people to not complete a course of antibiotics, or not use as prescribed. If this happens, it is probable that not 100% of the bacterium that caused the staph infection will have been killed. Surviving staph bacterium develop a resistance to this antibiotic and multiply. As more and more antibiotics are prescribed, the number of staph bacterium that are able to resist those antibiotics become more numerous. The biggest problem with the use of antibiotics, is that they are non-focused. Therefore, they do not discriminate between good and bad bacterium, otherwise known as ‘Flora’ which can be found in the large intestines and form a large part of the body’s immune system. Without this immune system protection, ‘superbugs‘ are free to develop.

Hi,

Chemo-brain IS real: Scientists discover how cancer treatments damage white matter to cause mental fog

  • More than half of cancer patients treated with chemo experience brain fog
  • ‘Chemo-brain’ is a recognized phenomenon, but poorly understood
  • Stanford University researchers found that chemo affects three types of cells in the white matter
  • They also discovered that a drug that may block and reverse these effects

Scientists have finally begun to work out what exactly ‘chemo-brain’ is – and may have found a way to reverse the brain fog cancer treatment cause, a new study reveals.

More than half of patients that receive chemotherapy report experiencing a cognitive fog for months and sometimes years after undergoing the intensive cancer treatment, but doctors haven’t really understood what causes this.

A team of Stanford University scientists, however, have identified chemo’s effects on three different types of brain cells.

They think that chemo causes a sort of arrested development for some brain cells and blocks the activity of cells that help ensure our brain cells are well-fed with nutrients because the drug triggers an overly-active immune response.

In their experiments on mice, a drug to quell those immune cells helped to reverse chemo’s cognitive effects, giving the team hope that a treatment could be on the horizon.

More than half of cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy experience 'brain-fog.' A new study reveals how the drug affects three types of brain cells - and a potential way to reverse it

More than half of cancer patients who undergo chemotherapy experience ‘brain-fog.’ A new study reveals how the drug affects three types of brain cells – and a potential way to reverse it

The advent of chemotherapy was a revolution in the treatment of cancer.

Around the time of World War II, the US military’s tests of mustard gas led to the discovery that compound based on mustard gas could combat some cancers.

Soon thereafter, the predecessor to the now commonly-used methotrexate was discovered.

Tumors grow when a DNA mutation allows cells to divide and multiply out of control. But methotrexate’s predecessor blocked that DNA from replicating, so it blocked cancer growth, too.

Chemo’s roots in poisons and warfare are telling. Any chemotherapy is toxic to us – it’s just most toxic to carcinogenic cells.

And our body responds accordingly. chemo often makes patients nauseous, unable to eat, makes them achy and tired and makes their hair fall out.

Most worryingly to many cancer patients, chemo often comes with a decline in cognitive function that can last far longer than the treatments – or even the cancers, in some cases – themselves do.

Chemo-brain was once dismissed as a wive’s tale.

Even the world-renowned Mayo Clinic still calls the term ‘misleading’ and says that it is ‘unlikely that chemotherapy is the sole cause of concentration and memory problems in cancer survivors.

We are at last beginning to understand what role it does play, however.

The Stanford researchers focused on the neuron-supporting brain cells in the white matter.

Three particular types seemed implicated in chem-brain: oligodendrocytes, astrocytes and microglia.

Oligondendrocytes produce myelin, the coating that protects neurons. If these sheaths are damaged incomplete or missing, signals sent between brain cells are liable to interference. Like a radio, the signals might not come through clearly – or at all.

Astrocytes lay important supporting roles for neurons, making sure that they are running smoothly and getting sufficient nutrition.

And microglia are the brain’s own personal immune system.

The researchers gave some mice with cancer chemotherapy, and left the others untreated.

In the brains of those who had had chemotherapy, the myelin-producing cells never reached maturity, so they couldn’t produce sufficient myelin to protect the neurons.

As a result, the mice moved more slowly, and had a harder time recalling elements of an environment that should  have been familiar to them.

Even when they were injected with cells that would become oligondendrocytes from healthy mice, the cells got stuck in a state of arrested development in the chemo-treated mice’s brains, suggesting it was something about the toxicity of the brain environment that was interfering with this process.

On the other hand, chemo seemed to supercharge the brain’s immune cells. The microglia were ‘persistently activated’ for at least six months after chemo was administered.

They were on the defensive, behaving as if there was an infection or other pathogen to fight off, which likely meant prioritizing defensive action over other functions like nutrition.

Indeed, the overactivity in the microglia interfered with the astrocytes, and the neurons struggled to get enough nutrition, which could be an additional cause of brain-fog.

Remarkably, the Stanford researchers discovered that they could use a drug that attacked the microglia to restore the balance between them and the nutrient-feeding cells – reversing the cognitive effects of the chemo.

‘The biology of this disease really underscores how important intercellular crosstalk is,’ lead study author and Stanford neurologist Dr Michelle Monje said.

‘In addition to existing symptomatic therapies – which many patients don’t know about – we are now homing in on potential interventions to promote normalization of the disorders induced by cancer drugs.

‘There’s real hope that we can intervene, induce regeneration and prevent damage in the brain.’

Hi,

Antibacterial Efficacy of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles

A wide variety of nanotechnological devices for the treatment of infectious diseases have been developed, including microemulsions, vaccines, and metallic- inorganic-lipid- and polymeric-based nanoparticles.

Metallic NPs such as silver (AgNP) and gold (AuNP) show unique and considerably distinct physical, chemical, and biological properties due to their high surface-to-volume ratio, with which surfaces can be modified with ligands containing functional groups, providing an electrostatic or steric stabilization.

Attached below is a 10 page 2017 Research Article published by Hindawi Journal of Nanomaterials on this subject of nanoparticle technology.

It is rather technical but it concludes:

“Currently, an intense investigation in nanotechnology and its applications in infectious or contagious diseases has led to the development of antimicrobial formulations from nanoparticles that act as an effective bactericidal agent. In this study, it was demonstrated that an increase in the antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria appears when silver nanoparticles are capped with the UBI antimicrobial peptide, probably due to the multimeric or polyvalent arrangement of ligands distributed on the nanoparticle surface. Additional studies are required to understand the structure of multivalent nanoparticles and stabilization mechanisms not yet elucidated”.

That another friend is sheduled to have some 12″ of bowel, the Ascending Colon, removed to remove several sites of early stage cancer later today, and will be returning sometime later to have various less ominous polyps removed from the Colon – he can with some justification be more optimistic having discovered the problem early from the national bi-annual bowel screening & a resultant Colonoscopy.

COLON 01

Also another friend just 50, 10 days ago had her Ovaries and part of her Fallopian Tubes + her Uterus removed, due to pre-cancerous Cysts

There’s a lot of it about!

Looking out for the symptoms & not just detecting it early but dealing with it as soon as possible, prefferably in its early stages, offers the best chances of survival!

How to Check if You Have a Lump on Your Breast

Follow this step-by-step guide to perform a breast self-examination.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women, and every year the number of deaths from it increases.

So what’s a gal to do? The best bet is to learn how to perform a breast self-exam accurately and trust your instincts if you think something isn’t right. The self-exam may identify an undetected lump, while a screening can highlight previously undetected issues.

Research on the best way to detect breast cancer early varies. But the low-tech breast self-exam, if performed accurately, can aid in the detection of breast cancer, as do routine mammograms.

Breast self-exam steps

Doctors recommend performing a monthly breast self-exam about five days after your period starts so that your breasts won’t be tender.

1. Take a good look.

Standing in front of the mirror, scan your breasts for any changes in size, color or shape. Hold your arms by your side, then raise them up and do the same scan.

Make an appointment with your doctor if you notice any of the following:
• Rash or swelling
• Bloody discharge coming from the nipples
• Odd dimples, puckering or bulging underneath the skin
• A nipple that has changed position or become retracted
• Lump or a hard nodule
• Veins on one breast that are larger than the other

2. Do a touch test lying down.

Lying down, use your right hand to examine your left breast. Your breast should be as flat as possible on your chest.

Keeping the pads of your fingers together and flat, move in a circular motion in small intervals around the breast, working from top to bottom and from side to side.

Your self-exam should cover the area from your collarbone to the top of your sternum and from your armpit to the middle of your chest. Be intentional and work slowly so that you check the entire breast.

Vary the pressure so that you feel through the various layers of tissue. Use light pressure for the outer layer of tissue, medium pressure for the middle layer and firm pressure to feel the deep tissue.

Then repeat the entire process, using your left hand on your right breast.

3. Do a touch test standing up.

Using the same technique, examine both of your breasts while standing. Some women find this step easier to do in the shower when the skin is wet and easier to manipulate.

It should go without saying that if you find a lump during your self-test, tell your doctor. But don’t panic — a mammogram should tell you more.

“The most important piece of advice for women is to get your screening mammograms,” said Maria Nelson, MD, assistant professor of clinical surgery at Keck School of Medicine of USC and a breast surgeon at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center of Keck Medicine of USC.

If you or your doctor suspects that you have symptoms of breast cancer, a biopsy will be performed to determine whether there is a malignancy and what further action should be taken.

Hi,

NHS heart test is a ‘poorly executed gimmick’ that will frighten millions, warns health advisor

  HEART 04
Dr Ben Goldacre suggested the test would needlessly frighten millions of healthy people

government health adviser has criticised an NHS calculator which predicts when people will have a heart attack or stroke, saying the science behind it is “ridiculous”.

Dr Ben Goldacre, who has just been appointed by the health secretary as chairman of the new Health Tech Advisory Board, suggested the test would needlessly frighten millions of healthy people.

He said the online quiz, offered by Public Health England (PHE) and the NHS website, was a “poorly executed gimmick” which would heap pressure on GPs  by instructing everyone over the age of 30 to demand cholesterol checks.

PHE says almost two million people have completed the quiz, which found that four in five had a “heart age” older than their actual age, meaning they are at risk of a stroke or heart attack.

However, Dr Goldacre is among a number of doctors questioning the accuracy of their methods. The online tool asks individuals aged 30 and over a series of questions, including age, weight, family history of heart disease and readings of blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

However, if readings are unknown, the calculator provides estimates based on the national average. This typically adds between one and five years to the biological age.

Critics said those using the calculator are likely to be healthier than those that do not, meaning the “worried well” would be rushing to book GP appointments, on the basis of flawed science.

And a number of patients trying the quiz this week were bemused when given advice to lose weight, or to cut blood pressure levels, only to find that revising the figures to “ideal” levels made no difference to their estimates.

Dr Goldacre, director of the Evidence-Based Medicine DataLab at Oxford University, has just been appointed by health secretary Matt Hancock to lead a new advisory board which will highlight the best ways to use technology and data in health.

“This test is ridiculous,” he said. “There are 8.7 million people in the UK in their 30s. This PHE ‘heart age’ tool seems to be incorrectly telling them ALL to go to their GP to get their cholesterol checked.

“If only one in 100 do so, that’s 87,000 pointless GP consultations,” he tweeted just hours before his appointment as Mr Hancock’s adviser was announced, later describing the plans as “just silly”.

Earlier this week, Mr Hancock heaped praise on the quiz, tweeting a video of him trying the test as PHE published its latest findings. He said: “Today I used the terrific NHS Heart Age tool from @PHE_UK to find out how old my heart is. Says my heart is 40 – a month older than me. Must do more exercise!”

Prof Jamie Waterall, national lead for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at PHE, said: “The heart age test is a simple way of helping people think about their heart health.

“It does not create any extra demand on GP services and there is no evidence to suggest this will happen. What we have seen is a big increase in people accessing lifestyle information, which is fantastic.”
