Hi,

scientists have proudly announced their ability to store data on DNA and that within 10 years one gram of DNA would be capable of storing 7 Billion x 64GB of data – wow won’t that be usefull, then all they need is to work out how to retrieve it!

In the meantime actual steps towards a totally new approach to medicine in the most holistic form imaginable seem to be the way forward not just holistic but ‘whole-istic’!

This seems much more valuable to me than storing endless data, when it seems most data gathered confidentially is merely used by our burgeoning police state style authorities! Or put on lap tops, hard drives, CDs or the like and left in taxis or on trains!

However we could find care of our bio system internally will solve many of mankind’s illnesses and diseases!

Modern medicine

Microbes maketh man

People are not just people. They are an awful lot of microbes, too

POLITICAL revolutionaries turn the world upside down. Scientific ones more often turn it inside out. And that, almost literally, is happening to the idea of what, biologically speaking, a human being is.

The traditional view is that a human body is a collection of 10 trillion cells which are themselves the products of 23,000 genes. If the revolutionaries are correct, these numbers radically underestimate the truth.

For in the nooks and crannies of every human being, and especially in his or her guts, dwells the microbiome: 100 trillion bacteria of several hundred species bearing 3m non-human genes. The biological Robespierres believe these should count, too; that humans are not single organisms, but superorganisms made up of lots of smaller organisms working together.
It might sound perverse to claim bacterial cells and genes as part of the body, but the revolutionary case is a good one. For the bugs are neither parasites nor passengers. They are, rather, fully paid-up members of a community of which the human “host” is but a single (if dominating) member. This view is increasingly popular: the world’s leading scientific journals, Nature and Science, have both reviewed it extensively in recent months. It is also important: it will help the science and practice of medicine (see article).

All in this together

The microbiome does many jobs in exchange for the raw materials and shelter its host provides. One is to feed people more than 10% of their daily calories. These are derived from plant carbohydrates that human enzymes are unable to break down. And not just plant carbohydrates. Mother’s milk contains carbohydrates called glycans which human enzymes cannot digest, but bacterial ones can.

This alone shows how closely host and microbiome have co-evolved over the years. But digestion is not the only nutritional service provided. The microbiome also makes vitamins, notably B2, B12 and folic acid. It is, moreover, capable of adjusting its output to its host’s needs and diet. The microbiomes of babies make more folic acid than do those of adults. And microbiomes in vitamin-hungry places like Malawi and rural Venezuela turn out more of these chemicals than do those in the guts of North Americans.

The microbiome also maintains the host’s health by keeping hostile interlopers at bay. An alien bug that causes diarrhoea, for instance, is as much an enemy of the microbiome as of the host.

Both have an interest in zapping it. And both contribute to the task. Host and microbiome, then, are allies. But there is more to it than that. For the latest research shows their physiologies are linked in ways which make the idea of a human superorganism more than just a rhetorical flourish.

These links are most visible when they go wrong.

A disrupted microbiome has been associated with a lengthening list of problems: obesity and its opposite, malnutrition; diabetes (both type-1 and type-2); atherosclerosis and heart disease; multiple sclerosis; asthma and eczema; liver disease; numerous diseases of the intestines, including bowel cancer; and autism. The details are often obscure, but in some cases it looks as if bugs are making molecules that help regulate the activities of human cells. If these signals go wrong, disease is the consequence.

This matters because it suggests doctors have been looking in the wrong place for explanations of these diseases. It also suggests a whole new avenue for treatment. If an upset microbiome causes illness, settling it down might effect a cure.

Yogurt companies and health-food fanatics have been banging this drum for years. And in the case of at least one malady, irritable-bowel syndrome, they are right. So-called probiotics, a mixture of about half a dozen bacterial species found in yogurt, do act to calm this condition. But there is little evidence that consuming probiotics has the tonic effect on healthy people that certain adverts suggest.

A handful of doctors are taking a more fundamental approach to another microbiome-related disease, infection with Clostridium difficile. This bacterium, which causes life-threatening distension of the gut in some people who have been treated with antibiotics and thus had their microbiomes disrupted, is a bane of hospitals. It kills 14,000 people a year in America alone.

But recent experiments have shown it can be eliminated by introducing, as an enema, the faeces of a healthy individual. “Stool transplants” are a pretty crude approach, to be sure, but the crucial point is that microbes are much easier to manipulate than human cells. For all the talk of superorganisms (and despite the yuck factor of what is being moved from one body to another), transplanting a microbiome is far easier than transplanting a heart or a kidney.

Disgusting but useful

Two other areas look promising.

One is more sophisticated deployment of the humble antibiotic, arguably the pharma industry’s most effective invention. At the moment antibiotics are used mainly to kill infections. In the future they might have a more subtle use—to manipulate the mix of bugs within a human, so that good bugs spread at the expense of bad ones.

The other field that may be changed is genetics. Many of the diseases in which the microbiome is implicated seem to run in families. In some, such as heart disease, that is partly explained by known human genes. In a lot, though, most notably autism, the genetic link is obscure.

This may be because geneticists have been looking at the wrong set of genes—the 23,000 rather than the 3m. For those 3m are still inherited. They are largely picked up from your mother during the messy process of birth. Though no clear example is yet known, it is possible that particular disease-inducing strains are being passed down the generations in this way.

As with all such upheavals, it is unclear where the microbiome revolution will end up. Doctors and biologists may truly come to think of people as superorganisms. Then again, they may not. What is clear, though, is that turning thinking inside out in this way is yielding new insights into seemingly intractable medical problems, and there is a good chance cures will follow. Vive la révolution!

06-Jun- 2011 – CLINIC – RESULTS & THE PLAN!

Hi,

Shortly after returning from the canteen our name came up and it was into Clinic with Dr. Lester.

Chatted for a few moments about having eventually got married after 26 years – he was quite miffed as we had beaten him as he had been with his partner for 23 years when they got married! He was originally a Londoner but has married a Welsh girl.

Anyway cutting to the chase:

Firstly he is surprised at how spot on my bloods are considering I’ve got one kidney, one adrenal gland years of cancer and buckets of chemo!!

He sees no problem there and is very pleased he has managed to so successfully trash my bloods every time with chemo thus starving the cancer.

Now for the scan:

Some good and some not so bad!

For the first time he feels he can, since I understand the limitations, talk of a cure.

Obviously this is NOT a cure of cancer but a cure of this outbreak and we then have a watching brief, if lucky, for the next return!

Even if we win this round it could be back in 3 months, or 3 years or if VERY lucky longer.

Caveat:

The tumour on the Uretal stump would seem to have shrunk by about 20% that is OK but not wonderful.

The Radiologist and he had conferred and they believe that the Lymph Node which was necrotic & cancerous seems free of cancer but due to deformation it is hard to be certain.

Schematic diagram of a lymph node showing flow...LYMPH NODE Image via Wikipedia

However it does seem that the Lymph Node on The Femoral Artery which was believed to be cancerous almost definitely isn’t and is, like apparently many lymph nodes, naturally deformed and NOT cancerous.

So What Now & Why:

OK so the game plan changes!

Dr. Lester is relatively pleased particularly as the cancer HAS responded to chemo on the dosages he advocated but it hasn’t destroyed it totally.

The fear is now that if he ploughs on for the full programme as originally planned the cancer may well become imune to the treatment but the chemo will go on beating me up! I gather the aim is to kill the cancer before you kill the patient!

So we now give it one more round of chemo to ‘drive the nail home’ so to speak.

That is a day 01 which is on Wednesday 08-Jun-2011 which is Carb & Gem

Then the following Wed 15-Jun-2011 which is a day 08 with Gem only.

The next phase will be a schedule of 20 hits of Radio Therapy – 5 days a week for 4 weeks. But more of that later when IO know what the full game plan is.

Lester did say that the sideeffects are less punishing but that I am likely to be very tired during the last 2 weeks – Hardly surprising 80 Mile round trip to Velindre on the same boring bit of M4 every day!!

So that is the game plan so far.

I’m ‘fairly’ laid back about it – but then again what choice do I have! So it is best to not get wound up about it – laughing is always a good medicine and with all my various contacts and blogs I just don’t have time to be concerned! JUST SCARED 😉

06-Jun-2011 – THANKS ALL

06-Jun-2011 – THANKS ALL

Hi,

I’m just about to dash off to Clinic at Velindre on the edge of Cardiff but I felt I really must thank the literally 100s of people who have not only congratulated us on the marriage last Tuesday but also given tremendous support in my battle to defeat cancer.

I am ever astonished by the incredible generosity and emotional support of both friends and people whom I have never met.

I do so hope this blog offers some hope and a warm and comforting arm across the shoulder of all who are themselves fighting this pernicious disease.

Thanks for your wonderful support it really counts and if my blog helps just one person be they victim, carer or cared for – then it is worthwhile.

YOU can probably help cancer patients most by talking openly and freely about the disease and when they fail to get the standards of care they deserve then help them to formulate and carry through their reasoned, logical well documented complaint – Nothing improves a system better than a factually presented assessment.

A concise and cogent report WILL help your Oncology Consultant to get the funding he needs!

Never turn a blind eye to poor service or a shoddy hospital – Nothing improves medicine more than rational comment from patients and their friends.

Thank You all for your support, friends, family and strangers alike.

Regards,
Greg_L-W.

04-Apr-2011 07:15hrs. I SUPPOSE I’D BETTER FACE IT ALL! BONE SCAN

04-Apr-2011 07:15hrs. I SUPPOSE I’D BETTER FACE IT ALL! BONE SCAN

Hi,

To view The Scan Images CLICK HERE

having eventually gone to sleep last night (well actually this morning) I had the alarm set for 07:15hrs. so that I would have time to get up have a shower and leave at 08:00hrs. although it is only half an hour to Newport I had no idea what so called rush hour would be like and I had to find parking so not wanting to be late the day started early for me.

Lee had slept in the spare bedroom partly because I have become a VERY restless sleeper and I didn’t want to wake her leaving but she was up making me coffee when I stumbled out of bed at 07:30hrs.

Lee is being very stoic but it is not possible to hide her fear – understandably, she has known me since 1974 or 5 and we have been together now for 26 years for more hours of the day than most as we have worked together all of that time.

Anyway of I go and as for rush hour in Newport one wonders if ANYONE works as the traffic was light and the main bus queues were school children off to school – The industries of Newport are long cone, the tool makers, the steel works, the coal industry and the docks to be replaced by a raft of useless bureaucrats and a collection of naff lumps of tortured iron work trying to be passed off as art!

Newport is a truly horid town with nothing going for it and it has been said that if Britain was to be given an ennema the tube would be put in Newport – but clearly that was said by someone who hasn’t been to either Bettws and it is Cardiff Bay that produces the largest output of noxious flatulence!!

0840hrs. in the hospital on the Urology unit saw Steph picked up a slip for bloods from Janet and off on the trek to Phlebotomy – in and done by 09:30hrs. and off to find Nuclear Medicine on floor 3.

Arrived early for the appointment and apparently my dosage has to sit and lose strength for about 15 minutes so I went for a coffee. Back spot on just as a yound woman about 37/8 emerges with her Mother and having had a Nuclear treatment is told to be back in two hours – I reminded her that although it was Newport she must be sure not to get pregnant in those two hours as it said on all the forms stay away from pregnant women and babies (My Pleasure!!).

Oh well they laughed and it broke the gloom and trepidation in the waiting room!! (It transpired later that the poor woman has had Crohn’s Disease for 18 years steadily getting worse!)

Straight in and a tiny needle in the right arm this time fill with blood and then evacuate into my arm!

I gather this is Tritium and Phosphate or some such (as I recal Tritium is an isotope of water!! I presume the phosphate is to make it ‘stick’) – I am now sent off for 3 hours to let this permeate my bone structure where I gather it will show up hot spots!!

For a Hospital the main canteen is quite pleasant and airey so whilst I read the papers and drank my required two pints of fluid – I pondered why everyone is so horrified at the idea of reorganising The NHS.

Perhaps someone can tell me why in an NHS canteen there are so many junk tinned and bottled fizzy drinks, water in plastic sterate bottles, fatty food, fried and or with batter!

This leads to the obvious outcome – I can think of nowher I could go with an edless succession of grossly over weight people and the patients are, many of them, even fatter!

13:00hrs. and I’m well cooked and ready for the Rotisserie!

A Machine Very Similar To This!

On the bed ready to roll – well NOT really, the machine which had a new control part fitted on Thursday is now on the blink!

Back into the waiting room whilst they hit the machine with a bigger hammer and some choice ‘word’, after a reboot or two its off again!

The 3 huge ‘cameras?’ swing into position and the one above me starts to pulse up and down with my breathing 2″ from my nose and then it starts and for 25 minutes I slowly emerge leaving a trail on the VDU!!

Another wait whilst the Radiographer has a look at the scan and then off to X Ray as there is an area seemingly ajoining the spine mid rib cage right hand side that they are not happy about.

NOT HAPPY!! You can guess how ‘Happy’ I am!!

So it is onto the big overhead XRay machine and half a dozen plates from strange angles!

I have this nasty feeling they are hunting for a soft tissue image of a possible tumour on, in or by the spine!

Sadly it is above everyones’ pay grade to count me in on the Easter Egg Hunt!

I guess it is good for their figures, as if they can make you wait they have every chance the stress will give you a coronary and you die on someone else’s statistical sheets!

Oh well all will be revealed on Wednesday and Janet has me in for an appointment with Doctor Lester at 12:00hrs.

I dropped the car off with Derek on the way home and he ran me home as he is going to put the car through MOT between my appointments and ensure it is reliable and won’t let Lee or I down for appointments or when we need it. The last thing we need is car hastles at the moment!

My thanks to Derek – we have a small number of very reliable friends and it has been quite humbling that so many UKIP branch chairmen, members and etc (to prevent embarrassment) have written, eMailed and phoned to wish me well and beg me not to quit keeping them informed as I am the only source (with Junius) of honest information they trust, with a proven track record, that informs them about their own Party!

Well we can’t let a bit of tedious cancer get in the way of the flow of news in defence of these United Kingdoms can we!

Thanks for your support it is hugely valued as is that of the many other friends who have contacted me.

I just want to say sorry for copping out at times and leaving Lee and friends to cope!
Any help and support YOU can give her will be hugely welcome.
