Hi,

having so recently posted David Tang’s praise of the NHS on 07-Aug-2017 it was sad to read of his demise.

If you missed my earlier article CLICK HERE

A Tribute To David Tang

Emma Weymouth pays tribute to her close friend and Shanghai Tang founder David Tang: a brilliant man who was loved so much and will be missed by so many

THERE are no words to do justice to David Tang, and as I write I can imagine him scoffing, correcting my grammar and blasting me with a one-liner to well and truly put me in my place. Always keeping us on our toes, one step ahead and ready at the drop of a hat to say something shocking at the top of his booming voice, outrageous enough to reduce a room full of his esteemed guests to a quivering mass of raucous laughter. Among countless other attributes, we loved him for his ruthless sense of humour – if you told him you’d lost 10 pounds, he would look you calmly in the eye and say, “What, sterling?” then chuckle with his familiar grin and happy snort. He was certainly the funniest, most intelligent and supremely generous friend any of us will ever have.

The inimitable David Tang

This week we lost one of the greats. A wit like no other, a philanthropist and businessman who could outdo us all, whether quoting Plato, playing a piano concerto with elegance and showmanship, or retelling one of the world’s naughtiest jokes in Chinese. On arriving at China Tang one Sunday evening for a late dinner, my husband Ceawlin and I happened upon David, who invited us to join his table, full of familiar faces. A few moments later, Tom Jones stood up and serenaded us all with his rendition of “Kiss”, to the delight of everyone.

David was a maker of magic, literally and figuratively. I remember an afternoon at his and his wife Lucy’s idyllic coastal country house in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, and no matter how hard David tried, one of his old classic card tricks kept failing to work. This enraged him beyond belief, but made the day even more entertaining.

Edward Tang, David’s son, and I met on our first day at UCL, and stuck together for our three-year History of Art course. We have remained firm friends ever since. Ed is godfather to our son John, and I have always adored him, but never have I been prouder of him or loved him more than I do now. This after all is not only a tribute to David, but also to his wonderful family, who have doted on him, held his hand and comforted him up to his last breath. Lucy has been his rock, and was the blood in his veins. Stoical to the last, she has faithfully supported David and calmly kept on top of everything, whilst navigating an emotional rollercoaster too terrible to imagine. The support, too, of David’s beloved and talented daughter Victoria has been unparalleled, with her husband Chris and beautiful baby Rocco alongside, providing the tenderness and companionship any of us would wish for during our last moments in this life.

The light that shone from David inspired us all, and can never be extinguished. I can think of no one else who has brought such immeasurable joy to so many of our lives, with the driving force of a Superman and the energy of 50. Even when his health began to fade, his mind remained robust to the very last. The China Exchange, an ideas space that David founded as a “dynamic centre of excellence in Chinatown”, will continue to host varied and thought-provoking events, just as he intended. At his farewell party, the many embraces of his cherished friends will be the lasting symbol of the adoration and admiration we feel for him – an irreplaceable soul. We will celebrate him, treasure our precious memories of him and keep him with us in our hearts forever.

Hi,

Steve Hewlett, broadcaster and journalist, dies aged 58

Presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Media Show revealed last year he had been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus

Broadcaster and journalist Steve Hewlett has died from cancer at the age of 58. He had documented the impact of the disease in a series of candid radio interviews and newspaper articles.

The presenter of Radio 4’s Media Show revealed last year that he had been diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus in March, and had spoken frankly about its development with Eddie Mair on Radio 4 and in a diary published in the Observer.

A fortnight ago, he had told Mair on the PM programme that doctors had decided to stop treatment and that he had married his long-term partner Rachel in hospital.

In a statement, Hewlett’s family said they had been “overwhelmed by the support of friends, colleagues and Radio 4 listeners”.

“The messages helped Steve enormously, especially over the last few months. The Royal Marsden have been amazing throughout the journey and we are indebted to all the wonderful staff there. We’d like to thank Eddie and all the PM listeners, and if people are still keen to help, then we’d like all donations to go towards the brilliant care the Marsden provide.”

The BBC said Hewlett had died on Monday morning while listening to Bob Dylan with his family at the Royal Marsden in London.

The BBC director general, Tony Hall, paid tribute to Hewlett as an “exceptional” journalist. He said: “His analysis of the media industry was always essential listening. Steve was a trusted voice that embodied everything positive in public service journalism. He was hugely popular not just with viewers and listeners, but with BBC staff.

“When I saw him last week, I told him how much I have admired his brave interviews with Eddie Mair about his treatment, which he did with a candour and sense of inquiry that was typically Steve. Our thoughts are with his family and many friends.”

Hewlett had presented the Media Show on Radio 4 since 2008 and was a media journalist and commentator, writing for Media Guardian for many years.

He was also editor of Panorama in the mid-1990s when the programme broadcast Martin Bashir’s interview with Princess Diana, which was watched by 23 million people.

A tribute to Hewlett’s work on The Media Show, of which he was the founding presenter, will be broadcast on Wednesday.

Hewlett’s openness about the impact of the cancer and its treatment had prompted a huge response from listeners, which Hewlett said had come as a surprise.

In an interview with the Observer, published earlier this month, Hewlett explained why he had decided to be so open about the last phase of his life: “I wanted to open myself up, to talk about what has been happening, but I didn’t imagine people would get as much from it as they have.

“Radio 4 talks a lot about having a relationship with its audience, how precious that is. This is the Radio 4 audience in top gear. That’s what it feels like to me.”

Asked by Mair on last Monday’s PM what he thought of the idea of “living each day as if it is your last” Hewlett said it meant he could relax and enjoy the time he had left.

“If you are told, literally ‘it’s any day’, I don’t know quite how you go about living every day as if it is your last. What do you do? Is this where you empty your bucket list? I literally don’t know what you do.”

“I think what you are looking for, what I am looking for, in that statement about living each day as if it is your last, is … it’s more kind of being able to relax, being able to enjoy, be able to watch the TV, be able to spend time with friends. That’s what I look towards, not to racing through a list of things.”

He also said he planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a proper wedding ring as the ring used in the ceremony was “a bit perfunctory”. When Mair chided him for sending his new wife out to “fix it”, Hewlett laughed: “Come on Eddie, there aren’t many up sides to this.”

Alex Graham, a TV producer and chair of the Scott Trust, the owner of the Guardian, who was a close friend of Hewlett’s for 35 years, said he was “utterly devastated” at his death.

He added: “I last saw him about a week ago. We talked for about three hours about everything and anything. And even though he was clearly in a lot of pain the whole conversation was shot through with his mischievous grizzly laugh.”

“I can’t believe that I’m now saying goodbye to him. He was a man of utmost integrity: fierce, honest and above all loyal. I’m very proud to have been his friend.”

Part of interview with Eddie Mair on Radio 4’s PM programme: 6 February 2017

Steve Hewlett: “So my kids are there, and the person who is going to be my wife is there, and the person who has been the closest thing I’ve had to a wife is there, and [Dr] Noreen takes me aside and says ‘if you are going to do this marriage thing you better do it now’.

“The hospital, extraordinarily whipped into shape by the amazing Noreen, and the whole thing is organised in an hour. I can’t tell, you. They managed to get a Chelsea registrar, a Chelsea vicar, they got someone else to come out and bless the rings, I’ve no idea who that was, we just happened to have rings … “

Eddie Mair: “What kept you Steve? What stopped you from doing this before?”

SH: “It was all moving along at a reasonably slow pace. And then of course the cancer happened and everything’s up in the air, so what do you do? There’s this wedding scene in this very room.”

EM: “Right where we are. Right at the end of the ward.”

SH: “The staff produced a wedding cake, the wife of the gent sitting next door offered Rachel some help with some cosmetics. The nurses managed to produce bunches of flowers, wedding cake, a couple of bottles appear from God knows where. And then this ceremony begins. And it was like a combination of all gas and gaiters and the vicar of Dibley, really.

“The idea that Britain doesn’t have people in it who really care about other people and will really go the extra mile when it matters is such nonsense. This little room here, this is Britain at its best.

“This is probably the quickest wedding, and the cheapest weeding that’s ever been held on these four isles.”

EM: “Can you remember what you said? What were your vows?”

SH: “Not a bit of it.”

EM: “Are you sure this happened?”

SH: “There are pictures … this extraordinary event, it was arranged in no time at all.”

EM: “Did you cry?”

SH: “Of course I cried. I can’t quite remember why I cried … no that’s not true.”

ARCHER, Stuart Malcolm who Died On 17-Dec-2014

ARCHER Stuart Died 17-Dec-2014

Stuart died On 17 December, after a long and very bravely fought fight against bowel cancer, at his home in Newport.

Stuart was aged 66 when he died.

He leaves his wife and partner through his illness Trish and was dearly loved by Suzanne and Tom.
He will be missed not only by his family but by many friends and the town of Chepstow, where he had worked with Sandra and the staff at Archer & Co. and had gained the respect of many for his courteous behaviour and dedicated service to his clients. He will also be missed and remembered by those who knew of his illness and his resolute determination to survive with humour as long as possible, making the most of every moment he could.
I was privileged to have had several very private conversations with Stuart during his illness & treatment where, even when he knew the outcome was inevitable, he courageously sought out opportunities to be used in new trials that would not just prolong his own life but would provide information to help others following down the path!
My thoughts are with his family and those whom he had worked with for so many years, who miss him greatly, at this challenging time, when we remember his life on the anniversary of his death.
A Celebration for the life of Stuart Malcolm Archer, in accord with his wishes, was held at St. Pierre Golf and Country Club on Thursday 8th January 2015 at 13:00hrs.
The service of commemoration at St. Pierre was held after a private family ceremony at the Crematorium and was conducted by a Civil Celebrant Gill Fortescue with an extensive, and very appropriate eulogy.
The Eulogy was delivered by Stuart’s long term friend David Evans.

No flowers, by request, however donations for St. David’s Hospice Care may still be sent, in memory of his life, to:

ALISON BEASLEY OF THE PYE CORNER AND WHITE LION CHEPSTOW WHO HAS BEEN ELECTED CHAIR OF THE LVA CHEPSTOW
PREVIOUSLY LANDLADY of THE FIVE ALLS

THE brother of a popular landlady and co-founder of Chepstow Radio, who died after battling cancer, said she had a “heart of gold”.

Alison Beasley, 53, who ran The White Lion/ Pye Corner, Chepstow, with her brother Gerv Durran, died at St Anne’s Hospice, Malpas, on March 21.

Mr Durran,46, said: “She had a heart of gold and always put others first.”

“We have been truly overwhelmed by the many tributes to her on Facebook.”

Ms Beasley’s partner Aston Hanington, 29, added: “She was someone who always had so many different things on the go, whether it was getting involved in a festival, the radio station or fundraising – she was an inspiration and amazing.”

Ms Beasley grew up in Bulwark and attended Chepstow School. Her love of music saw her work at Loco Residential Recording Studio, Usk, as a studio manager until 2003 where she met Coldplay and the Manic Street Preachers.

For the past 15 years, the mum-of-two has managed several pubs in the town with Mr Durran, including The King’s Head, The Five Alls and The Three Tuns.

An avid music lover and performer, she devoted much time to championing the start-up of Chepstow Radio and had her own DJ slot as ‘Landlady Lil’.

Chepstow resident, John McConnachie, said Ms Beasley understood exactly what Chepstow town needed to be prosperous and successful. He said: “Alison’s ability to relate to people and to create a vision that others bought into, coupled with a capacity for telling it like it is, made her stand out as a caring, entrepreneurial, ambitious and most of all –deeply authentic person.”

He added: “She would simply describe herself as a mum trying to make a living. Humble, courageous and positive to the end.”

“Alison’s legacy is of the richest sort. She compelled people to action and that shows no sign of slowing.”

Friends described her on Facebook as a ‘diamond’ and a ‘real community spirit who will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her’.

The funeral is open to all who knew her and will be held at St Mary’s RC Church, Bulwark, Chepstow, at 11am on April 1 and afterwards at The White Lion/Pye Corner. The family has asked for donations in lieu of flowers to St Anne’s Hospice, Malpas.
