Hi,

What Is Oesophageal Cancer

Oesophageal cancer starts in the food pipe, also known as your oesophagus or gullet – the tube that carries food from your mouth to your stomach.

Symptoms include difficulty swallowing, persistent acid indigestion, or heartburn, weight loss, pain in the throat or behind the breast bone, a chronic cough, hoarseness, coughing up blood, food coming back up and darker stools.

There are different types of oseophageal cancer, which vary dependant on what type of cell the cancer started in. These include adenocarcinoma, squamous cell cancer, undifferentiated cancers and other rare cancers such as melanoma, lymphoma and sarcomas.

Lifestyle factors – such as obesity, smoking and alchohol – cause 9 out of 10 oesophageal cancers.

Diet, age and other medical conditions can increase the risk too.

Treatment depends on where in the oesophagus the cancer is, how big it is, whether it has spread anywhere else in the body and general health.

Survival rates vary person to person as it depends on the individual condition, type of cancer, treatment and level of fitness.
